“Wonderwall” was released in October 1995 as the third single from “What’s the Story Morning Glory.” The song was an immediate hit in both the UK and the rest of the world as it peaked as high as #2 on the UK singles charts and reached as high as #8 in the American Hot 100 singles chart, making it the most successful Oasis song in the US. “Wonderwall” is still a hit today in the UK. In 2008 it ranked 76th on the UK list of best selling singles, and to date over 1 million singles and downloads have been purchased.
The background and meaning of “Wonderwall” has been debated since its release. The common perception is that the song was written about Noel Gallagher’s at the time girlfriend, Meg Matthews. In the song it is believe that Matthews is compared to a young man’s wall to which posters of athletes and musicians are attached. Noel Gallagher eventually went on to marry Matthews in 1997, but the couple divorced four years later.
Noel Gallagher opposes the common perception of “Wonderwall’s” meaning and has said the public perception has taken the meaning out of his hands. Gallagher was quoted in a magazine saying that the song is actually about an imaginary friend who will save you from yourself.
The title “Wonderwall” came from a 60’s film and ensuing soundtrack which was written by George Harrison. The ex-Beatle, Harrison also named his first solo album “Wonderwall.”
